About Stephen

Stephen Horst - Tap Into Your Artistry, Vocal Training

I’m Stephen Horst and I’m here to help you become a better performing artist. Whether you are a musical theatre performer, songwriter, news anchor, or even karaoke enthusiast, my passion is to help you sing (and speak) like you’ve always imagined.

A little bit about me:

I’m a vocal technician and trainer, acting coach, and career consultant. I’m also a professional performer and proud member of AEA and SAG-AFTRA.

I graduated with highest honors from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a degree in both music and theatre. I have been very fortunate to perform on Broadway, National Tour, and play regional leads all over the United States. Recently, I have played lead roles in 4 SAG short films and I’m excited this year to book my first TV/Film gig. Last year I went to producers for both HBO and Cinemax series regulars so I know I’m close. :)

I created Tap Into Your Artistry out of my own innate passion for stories, the mystery and joy of the human voice, and my love of singing, acting, and songwriting. My clients have performed on television in Smash, Glee; in songwriting venues around NYC such as Le Poisson Rouge, Cornelia Street Cafe, Arlene’s Grocery; in award winning cable television hosting; major league baseball radio broadcasting—and…on Broadway: Ghost, Sister Act, Evita, Wicked, West Side Story, South Pacific, The Phantom of the Opera, and Rent to name a few.

I was a “belter” when I was kid with a love for pop music. I then trained classically for 6 years (4 years in college, 2 years privately), and although I built a solid foundation, I knew something was missing. I wanted to be able to sing anything in any style. My first experience of this challenge was working as a lead singer on the MS Maasdam.

The only time I have ever had vocal problems was ironically under the care of an ENT. Looking back, I simply over-used my voice auditioning, teaching, Christmas caroling, and the thing that really did it—working a Telesales job with poor speaking habits. —But I believe everything happens in life for a reason. A light bulb came on as I had no choice but to apply everything I had learned on my vocal journey. I built my voice back from scratch and simultaneously created my own, unique method of singing: combining both Bel Canto (classical, operatic training) with Speech Level Singing (Pop/Rock) techniques. Thus was born, “Sing Like You’ve Always Imagined,” my online course which systematically teaches you how to teach yourself using simple, systematic, safe daily vocal conditioning.

This course is included for all my TIYA members. It is the perfect compliment to a weekly lesson, and is especially useful via FaceTime/Skype lessons.

I have always been a student of the voice and how we tell stories. I never stop learning from my students. The most rewarding and inspiring part of my job is helping you TAP into your artistry.

Feel free to contact me if you ever want to observe, have a question about your voice, or if you would like to schedule a lesson.
